Recycled Yarn and Certifications for Labels: an Honest Guide

Short answer: Recycled polyester (rPET) yarn can replace virgin yarn in woven labels for brands with a sustainability story. The certificates mean different things: GRS and RCS trace recycled content through the supply chain, while OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for harmful substances — it says nothing about recycled origin. What recycled yarn is - and is not

rPET yarn starts as recycled PET (typically bottles), re-extruded into polyester filament and woven exactly like virgin yarn. For labels, modern rPET performs close to virgin in weave quality and color range, with final feel and shade confirmed on a sample. One labeling nuance buyers miss: in fiber composition terms, recycled polyester is still polyester — the "recycled" part is a marketing and certification claim, not a different fiber name, and green-claim rules in the EU are tightening around exactly this kind of wording.

The practical point: "recycled" claims lean on GRS/RCS paperwork; "safe for skin contact" claims lean on OEKO-TEX-type testing. They answer different questions and one does not imply the other.

The two document types also matter. A Scope Certificate covers a facility and the products it is certified to make. A Transaction Certificate covers one specific shipment of certified goods and is the document that follows your actual order. If a recycled-content claim is going on a label or a hang tag, ask for the transaction certificate that names the yarn and the processing step you are buying.

How to verify before you rely on it

Scope — the certificate must cover the actual material and processing step you are buying, not a different product line.
Holder — check who the certificate is issued to; a mill's certificate does not automatically extend downstream.
Validity — certificates expire; check the dates and the certificate number against the issuer's database.

Is recycled yarn lower quality?

For labels, modern rPET yarn weaves and wears close to virgin polyester. Approve color and hand feel on a physical sample, as with any yarn change.

Does OEKO-TEX mean the label is recycled?

No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for harmful substances; recycled-content claims are what GRS and RCS cover. They are different certificates for different claims.

Can the recycled claim go on the hang tag?

Only when the paperwork behind it holds up — confirm certificate scope, holder and validity first, and check the destination market's green-claim rules with your importer.
